Beyond Tooth Fairy Tales: Talking to Kids About Tooth Loss
Losing a tooth for the first time can bring about both excitement and concern for young children. Your child may have heard stories about the Tooth Fairy and the gifts she brings in exchange for lost teeth, which can spark joy as your child eagerly awaits her visit.
However, some children may become nervous about losing a tooth due to fear of the unknown. Your child may believe the experience is painful or that they might swallow it. Unmasking these concerns can prevent unease in a child getting ready to lose their first tooth.
Take It Slow
Baby teeth typically begin to fall out around age six. Don’t wait until right before this happens, and burden your child with too much information all at once. Start the conversation early, even as early as age two or three. When your child asks about losing teeth, respond positively to show them that it’s natural and not scary.
Inspire Excitement
Children excited about losing their first tooth will often respond more positively when it happens. Read books or watch age-appropriate videos about tooth loss. Many children enjoy hearing about the tooth fairy and want to experience getting a gift under their pillow.
Be Prepared
While many baby teeth loosen and fall out with minimal struggle, there may be some aspects your child doesn’t like. For example, minor bleeding can occur when the tooth is pulled from its socket. Have gauze ready for your child to bite down on. Also, have a small container prepared to store your child’s tooth.
