Better Flossing
A flossing routine that begins early in life is important to your child’s dental health. Brushing alone does not ensure freedom from tooth decay or gum disease. A good flossing routine, amongst other consistent oral hygiene can help keep dental issues at bay.
Why Floss
Our children’s dentist in Melbourne notes that flossing removes food particles between the teeth and under the gum-line areas where toothbrushes can’t reach. It also helps to remove plaque, a harmful sticky coating of bacteria that forms on the teeth.
When to Begin Flossing Your Child’s Teeth
Start flossing your child’s teeth when he or she has two teeth that touch. This is usually at 2 or 3 years old. Since this practice requires manual dexterity, most children are not able to floss without help until they are a bit older, around 10 years old.
Consuming These Products Requires Flossing
Gummy vitamins and sour candies are particularly bad for teeth. The gelatin in these types of vitamins help keep the product together but also tends to stick to teeth. Additionally, these vitamins typically contain additional sugar.
Sour candies are sugary and their sour flavor comes from acid. It can severely damage tooth enamel in a matter of months. Our pediatric dentist in Melbourne recommends that if your child eats these types of foods, let your child’s saliva do its helpful work for 30 minutes. Then floss.
Products for Flossing
More than one flossing method may be possible. If using loose floss, take 18 inches, wrap it around a finger and insert it gently between two teeth. Move it down and up and around each tooth. Floss once every day for two to three minutes. Pre-threaded flossers may be an option too and are quick to use.
